Arctic Combat

Arctic Combat is a free to play online FPS published by Webzen. The game uses Unreal Engine 2.5 so that more players around the world that own pc’s with lower specs can join in, however they still made the game with high graphics.

“One of key system we have which differentiates our game from others is the gore mode, enemies limbs will fly depends where you shoot to kill him. We introduced this feature in order to provide more realism and greater feedback of shooting.”

The game is currently in beta testing so character customization is simple and also the game is a FPS not MMORPG, meaning that customization is pretty fair (face, helmet, and outfit at the moment). They plan on allowing players to have female characters, if they want to. The 2 battling factions are AF (Allied Force) led by the US and RSA (Red Star Alliance) led by Russia. The game also lets the players set they own assault/sniper classes and change while in the game. “AC's character advancement is based on their rank which is very similar to level systems in MMORPGs. Once character reaches each rank (level) he will be able to use better weapons and equipment.”

“There are 6 different modes at launch: Team Death Match, Free for all, Demolition, Conquest, Search and Destroy, and PVE missions. More and unique modes are under development too.”

Weapons/Armors/Items

“Just like any other online FPS, weapon is the most important tool to win the game. We offer a Trophy system in Online FPS, you get to have a chance to roll for unique to common items after each game ends, odds to receive these prize is totally random, your performance on the battlefield does little effect on your draw. As for these unique items you can trade with others through our Auction House, which is also the very first on an Online FPS like this.”

Cash?

“As for our revenue model we can proudly say that there will be No Cash Weapons in Arctic Combat. We know there have been a lot of complaints about unfairness with Cash weapons over-powering normal weapon, which makes paying users stronger and non-paying users weak and this is not a true free-to-play model at all.”

Another cool feature of the game is that some maps/modes allows the players to pick/use certain weapons that drop from enemies/allies or pick them somewhere on the map. For example:  RPG (rocket launcher), Air Strike packs, UAV (a drone for surveillance which allows you to spot your enemies for a few seconds), health packs, flamethrower etc…

Also the game allows players to play with bots.

“We offer one of the greatest AI you will ever find out there in online FPS market. We offer five different settings of difficulty level and if you try our most difficult setting AI mode, you will be very surprised. With these AIs we are currently developing various modes to entertain our users. So please look forward to our future update news.”

The game can be downloaded from the official website.
Note that the game is still in CBTesting!

Sudden Attack

Sudden Attack is a free-to-play MMOFPS developed by GameHi (South Korean company) and published by Nexon.

Gameplay

“There are two teams in the game, red and blue. Red is the Tanzirilo Independence Force (Silent Fox corps) while blue is the United Great Force (SA Anti-terrorist Police). Teams are then pitched into various types of gameplay matches in different maps such as Deathmatch, Destruction/Bomb Defusal, Capture the flag, or custom call of duties (such as sniper-only, pistol-only or knife-only). Either team must satisfy the conditions, such as defusing the bomb, or successful planting and detonation, or achieving an amount of kills or round wins. A new game mode, Delta Battles, consists of three teams, red, blue and green.”

The game offers a tutorial for those who aren't familiar with FPS games.

Game Modes

Deathmatch

The object of a deathmatch is to kill as many opponents as possible or reach a certain number of kills within a specified time limit. If you are killed during a deathmatch, you will respawn after 10 seconds.

Sub Mission

These special maps have different objectives than the ordinary game modes. Each objective is detailed in the map description.

Free Fire

Free Fire matches are total free-for-all battles, with no teams. Everyone is your enemy, and the first mercenary to reach the kill quota wins! This is where the skill of the individual really shines, so show everyone what you’re worth!

Demolition

In demolition mode, one team is tasked with planting a bomb at a specific location on the map and defending the bomb until it explodes. The opposite team must defend the spot and keep the bomb from being planted until the time runs out.

Touchdown

In a retrieval mission, both teams must rush into the map and pick a designated target object and place in in the target area in front of the enemy's base.

Knife Touchdown

The UGPF and the Tanzirilian Alliance have decided to set their differences aside for a “friendly” game of Knife Touchdown. The goal is simple: grab the case and get it to the other team’s end zone. Remember though, tackling is against the rules. If you want to stop the other guy, you have to stab him instead!

Siege

The object of Siege missions is to be the first team to capture a targeted spot and then hold it for a certain period of time against enemy assault. The first team to hold the spot for the designated amount of time is declared the winner!

Assault

Assault Mode matches are small-scale battles between two teams of up to three people each. The goals of the match for each team are simple: The Red team must survive by keeping away from the Blue Team for a predetermined amount of time. The Blue team must eliminate the Red team before time runs out. Each team member has one life per round and the team that wins the most rounds out of five wins.

Capture

The objectives for this mode depending on which team you are assigned are to either protect the target items from being captured by the enemy, or to infiltrate the enemy territory, retrieve the target items and return them to the safe zone. If you are killed during the mission there is no coming back till the next round.

Delta Battle

Three teams of five duke it out to capture and hold the opponent teams' Capture Points. Teams without a Capture Point can't respawn, so your goal is to usurp new Capture Points without losing any that you currently hold. Teamwork is the key in Delta Battle.

Source

The game also allows its players to do some missions to earn goods/exp, also the players will receive medals and decorations as well as titles, depending on what they’ve achieve in a certain amount of time…

Alliance of the Valiant Arms

AVA is a free-to-play MMOFPS, developed by Red Duck Inc and uses Unreal Engine 3. It was provided by ijji for the North American and Europe server until recently they transferred the databases to Aeria Games.

Gameplay:

“Players will join either the EU forces or NRF forces and attempt to complete their mission objective or eliminate the opposing team. There are 3 classes available in A.V.A, point man, rifleman, and sniper. A point man enjoys a quicker reload time and faster move speed, while a rifleman gains more ammo and the ability to hold more, along with heavier armour, and a sniper is allowed to use a sniper rifle and can fire shots that kill multiple targets. Each has their own advantage and disadvantage against other classes. Players are able to choose which class to play next during the game and also acquire Class Skills to further enhance unique characteristics of each class.”

Some of the most played modes in AVA are:

Annihilation - Players will be pit against each other in two teams that will attempt to reach a pre-set score, similarly to Team Deathmatch. Alternatively, the team with the highest score once the time runs out will win.

Domination - Both teams compete for domination over a target. The team with higher domination gauge or the one in control of the target when both sides have the same gauge will win.

Escort - The EU forces must escort a tank past enemy lines and repair it if struck down, while the NRF forces will be tasked with preventing this, usually by constantly taking the tank down with a RPG.

Free For All - Players are pit against each-other. The match ends when one player reaches the pre-set score or time runs out in which the player with the highest score wins.

There are also CO-OP missions available for players to try out, these can be played alone or in teams of 4.

Blacklight Retribution

BLR is a free-to-play MMOFPS that offers a number of game types and maps. The game does not contain any single player maps other than the training session.
Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Domination (a ticket type of game), King of the Hill (objective capture) and Kill Confirmed which is similar to Team Deathmatch, except players can collect tokens from their dead opponents for extra Combat Points, and pick up their own from dead teammates, to form a kill denied.

Weapon depots are a new addition to Blacklight: Retribution. By default, they can be used to buy Health or Ammo Refills, Flamethrowers, Rocket Launchers, and Hardsuits, which are pilot-able mechs equipped with a minigun and a railgun. These can be bought using Combat Points which can be earned by doing desired actions in the game such as killing opponents and capturing points. (Optional.)
Like its predecessor, Blacklight Retribution features the Hyper Reality Visor or HRV which allows the player to locate enemies, mines, weapon depots and Hardsuit weak points through walls and other obstacles for a very short amount of time. In HRV, the player is only able to move around, jump, and sprint, which may increase the chances of a HRV user being easily killed. HRV also has a very limited use and needs to recharge.”

The game has great graphics and is well designed, however one of the bad points is that when you play any map it's sort of hard to acknowledge all the details and notice all the enemies due to the low luminosity of the game, even if you change the setting it will be more or less the same.

With the exception of Zombie Mode, all the other modes can have up to 16 players, 8 on each team.

Borderlands

What is Borderlands?

Borderlands is a first-person role-playing shooter which allows players to participate in 4 man co-op missions in order to destroy creatures, psychos and stop the evil mastermind, Handsome Jack.

Story:

“Borderlands follows the story of four new Vault Hunters as they fight to free Pandora from the clutches of Handsome Jack, the brilliant, charismatic, and utterly despicable CEO of the Hyperion Corporation.

Players will fight across the whole of Pandora to stop Jack from awakening an ancient alien evil known only as "the Warrior." Their quest will bring them into contact with some familiar faces from the old game – most notably, the original four Vault Hunters: Roland, Lilith, Brick and Mordecai. They, along with some brand new characters, will help players defeat Jack, destroy the Warrior, and save Pandora.”

Features:

BL2 offers the chance to play with your friends as long as you have a GameSpy account. If you don’t have one then that won’t be a problem as the game itself allows you to create an account and connect with your buddies in a few seconds.

The land of Pandora has to offer a lot of weapons for everyone to use, from normal weapons/shields/grenades to extra-terrestrial artifacts and many more.
Explore and conquer the new environments within Pandora and face new enemies controlled by “Handsome Jack”.

More features on the Official Webpage.

In-game:

BL has great animated graphics and an easy to use menu. If you are not sure you can make it in the online gameplay, you can simply try the single player feature.

Online gaming with friends covers the same quest tutorial; however playing with others makes it more enjoyable. Also a friendly little robot will be there to help your 4-man team.

If you’re already used to FPS games, this one will be more of a challenge due to the fact that you have big recoil on the beginning weapons, which makes it more enjoyable and entertaining. Attention is also required in order for you to spot all the enemies and not die in an instant.
